The theme of this week's Simulated Jury was government-subsidized loans: on the one hand, acceptance and, on the other, the rejection of such subsidies.
On May 10, the Institute's second Simulated Jury took place in 2021. This format consists of holding a debate on a current topic, by constituting defense and accusation groups.
"Should you reject subsidized loans?" was the theme chosen to promote reflection among associates of state incentives for the development of a specific business activity or region in the country.
Thus, the first group, formed by Felipe Caroni, George Dalpiero and Jéssica Prata, demonstrated that the subsidy can be considered a refund of the money retained by the state and, thus, ease the weight of the government; while the second group, formed by Bruno Rigamonti, Cristiano Stein and Heitor Fernandes maintained that it was unacceptable to enjoy state incentives of any kind. Both groups used the values to defend their points.
Even with reasoned and coercive arguments, the second group lost the final vote of the Jury by seven points: 33x26. The group in favor of accepting subsidized loans won by working hard to legitimize subsidies according to the Brazilian reality and the institutional values that we currently live with.
The event was held exclusively online, and we intend to return to hybrid events soon.
